I might have squealed a little bit when I first saw the Lolita Shorts pop up in my Face Book Feed.  The ruffles along the hem are simply adorable, and the front sash & bow add style and sophistication without the fuss of belt loops.  This is a fun pattern for mixing fabrics, adding decorative stitching, or adding fun trim.

I sewed my Lolita shorts up in adorable quilting cotton, the mermaids are from Dear Stella and the Ovals are from Art Gallery Fabrics.  I got these fabrics in this month's 'Sew Coordinated' kit.... but you're going to have to wait until next week to hear all about that!

These shorts took me about an hour to sew up, and I bet I could make them even faster next time..... and there will be a next time - I have plans to make a pair out of wool or tweed for fall - eeep the cuteness.

Pattern Details:

  • 9 pages of color pattern pieces (I print in B&W and was still easily able to find my size)
  • All pieces are clearly labeled with piece name, number to cut, seam allowance, etc...
  • Clear Instructions that include color photographs for added visual help in construction.
  • Charts for fabric requirements, sizing chart, and finished measurements
  • Size Range: 2t-12y
  • Difficulty Level: Confident Beginner (for ruffles, waistband, & sash)

With highs in the low 70's here in San Francisco, it hasn't felt much like the muggy, HOT Virginia summers I'm accustomed to. But I couldn't let that deprive me (er.. my 2 year old...) of ruffled short cuteness! They're like bloomers, for older girls! And I love me the look of bloomers under a summer tunic :)

I paired the Lolitas with tights, a great way to transition shorts for fall. I LOVE this look, complete with the Bohemian Baby Doll top by Elegance & Elephants (read review here).

So what makes these shorts so special?? The DETAILS! I love the ruffle hem, but the scalloped shape of the side seam? AH-dorable. Both Suzanne and I opted to sew the tie-waist variation, but you can omit them and go for a faux-shirred look instead!

I agree this pattern is well suited for a confident beginner. It's a lot of the basics: gathering, sewing elastic casings, turning sashes. This is my second pair, and I whipped them up in a single naptime. 

The only part of this pattern I felt was challenging was the overlap of the front and back short pieces. I had to read the text a few times to better understand the illustrations. The rest of the pattern was very well illustrated, but for these steps the pins didn't show well against the fabric. Color pins or a few markings on the images would have represented these steps more clearly.
