This month we kick off a season known for flowers and chicks and fuzzy baby bunnies! But we can't forget the basketball extravaganza that IS March Madness. Which is why you'll design a look that honors both... a Springtime Outfit made with upcycled athletic apparel.
This duel premiers March 3. Voting begins immediately and runs through Midnight the following Thursday. Winners announced Friday!
We kick off Top Stitchers with this epic upcycling re-match! Last Spring, Michelle and Suzanne BROUGHT IT to the Skirt Fixation Challenge Create Upcycle week. Michelle totally transformed this button up and Suzanne found a rather crafty way to incorporate UNDERWEAR into her upcycle (scandalous!). Now they're back to style their kids in another round of upcycled looks!
My name is Michelle and am originally from NJ. My husband and I moved out to WA state 17 years ago and started our family shortly after that. Our girls are ages 15 and 9. You can find me blogging over at Falafel and the Bee, my online home.
My grandmother bought me a Singer Quantum xl-1 (this computerized sewing machine) when we got engaged 20 years ago, and I was terrified of it! I didn't even know how to sew! I slowly became acquainted with it and now, 20 years later, we are best friends. In fact I cannot imagine being without it. You could say that I am in love with an inanimate object.
I taught myself using intuition at first, and then the mighty internet to fill in the gaps. I consider the online sewing community to be my tribe. My people, if you will. I am so grateful for this resource!
I have some IRL friends that come to my house once a week, and we all craft/sew together. It is a blast, and keeps me on a regular sewing schedule, which I so need. Any other time I can sneak in a little sewing time, I just turn on a movie (usually something animated....don't judge), and stitch til my heart's content. Or until dinner needs to be made or the kids need to be shuttled somewhere. Whatever comes first.

I have been sewing with my mom since I was a little girl. But I really grew and developed my skills when I was in college and did costume design. I sew for my 3 kiddos and myself - because I deserve to be a little cute sometimes too ;o) I'm here as an upcycler, a wizard of transforming the old and neglected into something new, and I am probably still the most proud of two upcycled projects I have made - A jacket for my son from an old pair of pants a sweater and a men's shirt (and I drafted the pattern myself), and a dress I made last year with a sheet, a men's shirt and a pair of underwear - yep, I said it!
