Sunny Side Top and Heat Wave Shorts by Duchess and Hare

Hi there!! It’s Kari from That's-Sew-Kari with my latest review!  I sewed the Sunny Side Top and Heat Wave Shorts both by Duchess and Hare.  The Sunny Side Top is a modern take on a tube top and features center straps that tie in a halter or tie through two loops at the back bodice.  The Heat Wave Shorts are a slim-fitting short with with a straight hem or sweet scalloped hem. Both patterns cover sizes 2-12.

I feel like this is the quintessential summer outfit!  I chose a navy mystery fabric from Walmart that happened to be $0.50/yard (yep, I said 50 cents) that had a rayon feel to it for the top and I used white quilting cotton for the shorts.   I think I made the entire outfit for around $3.

Each time I sew Duchess and Hare, I am reminded that I just love how her patterns have beautiful finishes and usually have also learned a new technique.  For example, the straps are “rouleaux straps” and I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first how they would turn out (I even googled it...lol) BUT, holy moly, I want to add those type of straps to EVERYTHING!  When you turn them out, it’s seriously magical. Take the time to make them, you will NOT regret it and you will have learned something new in the process! The top is also finished with French seams so it looks just as pretty on the outside.  The scalloped hem on the shorts are finished with a facing. It all just looks so professional.

My daughter gasped when I showed her the finished outfit.  She LOVES it and so do I. I will definitely sew up more of these!
