Designer's Challenge - Peaches and Peanuts

Hi everyone! I'm Shannon, blogger over at Little Kids Grow and the designer behind the new line of sewing patterns called Peaches and Peanuts.

I love to sew for my kids, but over the years as they've gotten older, I noticed that they were beginning to either "size out" of all the cute patterns, or as they moved into their preteens and teens, their tastes began to change. I wanted to develop a pattern line specifically geared toward older kids sizes 6-14 (sometimes 4s, & 16s) that would give them lots of options for expressing their own personal style while remaining age appropriate, yet stylish. I'm excited to share my first pattern from the new line called The Jack and Jill Color Block Shirt. This is a unisex pattern featuring lots of options including 5 different sleeves, 4 collars, two pockets, and color blocking options. It's a relaxed fit shirt that's great for layering or as a stand alone. (Sizes 4-12)

I originally designed this shirt for my 6 year-old who loves trains and cars. He needed a basic shirt with somewhere to put his Hot Wheels, so I drafted a comfy shirt for him with a super long front pocket for him to stash his goodies. I then duplicated the shirt for my 8-year-old. He's developing his own sense of style, so I played around with a contrasting collar, button stand, and cuff, and then lengthened the shirt, so he could use it as a layering piece. When I received two thumbs up from my boys (well, except for the "scratchy tag" in the back, said my 6-year-old), I decided that this would be the perfect shirt to share in the Designer's Challenge. The girl's option didn't come in until we began testing and one of our testers (Thanks Sally!) asked about sewing one for her daughter and voilà, a unisex pattern was born!

As you can see from the pictures, the pattern was created for movement! Nothing restricting about this one. As a mom of 6 (and one on the way), I'm no stranger to growth spurts and "in between" sizes. Have you ever made something, and a month later it no longer fit? Frustrating, right? Well, no worries, I've got you covered. You should be able to get at least a season or two (hopefully!) out of this design (unless you have a son that's 13 and eating everything like mine. I'm not sure if any pattern could keep up with his growth right now. :) )

The tag line of my company is "Vintage Patterns for Modern Kids" because my designs are heavily influenced by the fashions of the 40s-70s. This season you'll see lots of design elements reminiscent of the 40s from rounded collars and knee length skirts to even "factory" overalls. While the early 40s were a time of practicality and simplicity due to wartime, it was also a time of "outside the box" thinking as fashion forward thinkers found ways to use limited fabrics resourcefully to make their own fashion statement. My style philosophy is similar: Style doesn't have to be difficult or expensive, it just has to reflect you.

Here are some of the sleeve options you'll find with The Jack and Jill Color Block Shirt:

I'm a practical mom that designs from a practical point of view. I hope you'll find The Jack & Jill Color Block Shirt a versatile, yet timeless addition to your child's wardrobe.
