Slouchy Cardigan by Heidi & Finn

Today Heidi and Finn are releasing their newest pattern - the Slouchy Cardigan.  The Slouchy Cardigan comes in sizes 12m-5t and 6-12yr  I am completely in love - it is made of knits, it is a perfect transition piece for fall, and I can definitely put this one in my upcycling category too!    Two of our lucky readers have the chance to win this pattern, so make sure to enter bellow.

Here are Becca and Kara to share their experience in a range of sizes (18m, 3T, and 12)!

Alright, alright. I'll admit it. I've been living in total denial. Summer? Over? No way. Somehow, in my post-baby zombie-state, I've been too busy nursing, toddler-chasing, diaper-changing, and rocking in the fetal position to have noticed the season's changing.

But, here I am at the end of August, enjoying unseasonably cool temps in Central Virginia, and I cannot deny that Fall is once again upon us. Time to work on that cool-weather wardrobe!

...except, my daughter hasn't outgrown all her summer clothes yet. What's a gal (or.. you know, her mom) to do??
Thankfully, Christine over at Heidi & Finn already thought up the perfect solution to my predicament with the perfect transitional piece: the Slouchy Cardigan.
I was sold first on the design... Um. Hello. This cardigan is ADORABLE.
And the practicality... No buttons + No ties = No Fuss. (If you read my earlier review, you'll know this is key in my pattern selection process!)

But the flexible fit takes the cake! I have rapidly growing children, after all. It's nice to make something a half a size too big knowing they'll be able to wear it for months!
Even this building is screaming "Summer's over!! Get cracking on that Fall
wardrobe!"
EVEN THIS BUILDING IS SCREAMING "SUMMER'S OVER!! GET CRACKING ON THAT FALL WARDROBE!"
But, before you think this review is all "rainbows and butterflies" - let me assure you. I was scared out of my wits. I'm a novice in the world of sewing apparel, much less using KNITS. (Ha.. I'm a poet and I... 'll spare you the rest of that cliche) You see, months ago I attempted a "simple" knit dress. It's somewhere in my scrap bag, riddled with tears.

"...you mean holes, right? Not like Boo-hoo tears?"

................yeah. Holes. Let's go with holes.
Lucky for this gal, the Slouchy Cardigan pattern includes great Knit-Tips. (Who knew my machine had a stretch stitch??). That's the other great thing about this pattern. I was thrilled to find how thorough the instructions were. The clarity of this tutorial squashed the "new-to-me pattern company" anxiety immediately.
Look at those little arm bands! I just love 'em :)
LOOK AT THOSE LITTLE ARM BANDS! I JUST LOVE 'EM :)
So, armed with a walking foot and new knit-knowledge, I set out to try again. While my technique needs some work, the assembly was a BREEZE. (Sewing sleeves with a stretch fabric?? So much easier than with woven. Just sayin')

I think if I were to dig for a down-side to this pattern, it would be the use of pins. I hate pins. They stab me. Every time.
If I were to do it again (and I will), I would change two things:
1. Fight my pin-aversion, and use them everywhere!
2. Make a smaller size. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled she'll wear this for months to come. But I'll probably end up belting it for a while until it can stay up on her shoulders.
Yup. "Flexible fit" alright. Thanks for checking, Miss K!
YUP. "FLEXIBLE FIT" ALRIGHT. THANKS FOR CHECKING, MISS K!
All in all, it's a great pattern I'll break out time and time again. And, it absolutely received the "Toddler Seal of Approval"!
"Hat tip" (...ha!) to Elegance & Elephants for their recently released
Fedora pattern I just had.to.have, and Cali Faye Collections for the
Racerback dress I modified here to fit my skinny minnie.

Hi everyone!  I'm Kara and I blog here.  I get to talk about The Slouchy Cardigan by Heidi and Finn today!  I've been sewing for close to 20 years and have recently opened up my own shop on Facebook here.  I have 3 cute kids and a super sweet husband.  Well, enough about me, here we go....

I was so excited when the opportunity came to review The Slouchy Cardigan, I jumped at the chance to make it!  Not only was I able to make one for my youngest DD, I made one for my oldest as well.  But first.....

I moustache you a question.....

Is this cute or what????

This cardigan comes in two size ranges, sold separately, 12m to 5 years and 6 years to 12 years.

This pattern is a beginner plus pattern. The Slouchy Cardigan is super easy and I only added the plus (to the beginner) because you will need to use knit for this cardigan.  One of the really nice features of the tutorial is that there are TONS (I mean tons) of hints on sewing with knits!  That's pretty exciting when you aren't sure what the heck you are doing!

This is a super fast sew at about an hour and a half.  I made two of them in one evening, no problem!

I even learned a neat little tip about sewing the sleeves on, but I'm not telling!

Can you see the excitement in her face???  Well, she is excited that I was able to sew her something.  She's 13 but I made her the 12 and added the largest banding size.  She can't wait to wear hers to school tomorrow!  Score!

There are a couple of variations to this Cardigan, one more fitted and the other more of a slouchy look.  I made both of these as the more slouchy version.  The tutorial shows you exactly what the difference is between the two versions.

This Cardigan is perfect for fall and can be worn anywhere!  Church, school, play, it goes with everything and fits over your favorite shirt easily to keep the chill off.

There are drafted pattern pieces with this tutorial and pattern.  There are material suggestions and yardage guides and a sizing measurements guide.    The fit is true to size and includes directions on how to make a more fitted or more slouchy look so you can use that to help you when deciding what size to make.

I can see getting a huge range of looks out of this cardigan just by changing up your fabric print.  Both of my girls absolutely love this cardigan and want more.  I have to admit, it is pretty cute!

Happy Sewing!

XOXO,

Kara
