Sewing for Christmas: The Be Curious dress by Ellie and Mac and the Animazing Skirt by Little Lizard King

It’s that time of year again.  The hustle and bustle, the lights, the smiles, the smell of evergreen, the crisp air, the songs, the celebration, but mostly the joy.  I love this time of year.  Yes it can be stressful, but in the end the joy and family time mixed with traditional music, pjs, and lasagna (yes, that’s our tradition) make for a great holiday.

With this time of year also comes with the tradition of Christmas dresses.  These dresses aren’t worn much; only to church and then at our family get together, but it is necessary regardless.  Now being a busy mom I can’t make them every year, but I do try to do at least every other year.  I am excited to make them this year as Ruth now has a little sister to make matching dresses. I haven’t made Abigail's’ yet but it is in the works.  I have to show you Ruth’s though!

This year I wanted something timeless, girly, but nothing over the top.  What is better than a dress with a pinafore over it?  I saw the Ellie and Mac Be Curious dress and knew that would be perfect for the dress.  Long sleeves to keep my girl warm as we live in New England, flowy with a ruffle on the bottom to finish it off.  This dress in itself is timeless.  Something reminiscent of the past but beautiful for the present.  This was then paired with the Animazing Skirt by Little Lizard King for the pinafore.  It is different than the traditional full top pinafore as I wanted to still show off the dress but give the look of a pinny.  It is really a suspender skirt with lots of fun animal faces but when you keep it plain and just pull it up a bit, it is perfect for the pinafore look.

This combo was perfect.  When I showed Ruth the finished combo she exclaimed, “My Christmas dress!” and hugged the mannequin that the dress was displayed on.  This is why we spend hours sewing up a dress that will only be worn a few times.  That joy to get something so special is the best gift there is.  I would spend many more hours just for that reaction every time. I am sure I am not the only one with these feelings as I know there will be many other moms and dads creating equaling beautiful garments for their kiddos.  And I am sure they will be met with equal squeals of joy!  Enjoy every squeal, every smile, every moment for this time of year goes by far too fast!

Happy Holidays!
